Canadian police say they foiled a major terror plot, backed by al-Qaeda, to derail a passenger train near the country’s biggest city Toronto. The police say they arrested two non-Canadians and charged them with terrorism related offences. The suspects have been under surveillance since August. The police said although innocent people might have been killed or injured, the threatened attack wasn’t imminent.

The surviving suspect in the Boston bombings has been charged with processing a weapon of mass destruction. If convicted, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev could receive the death penalty. He was charged by his bedside in the hospital where he was taking after being badly wounded when he was captured on Friday. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev indicated that he couldn’t afford to pay for a lawyer.  

Gunmen in northern Syria have abducted two bishops who were travelling from Turkish border to their * in the city of Aleppo. Syrian states media described their kidnappers as terrorists. A member of the Syrian opposition said the abductions happened on a road from the rebel held area. The two bishops are the most senior Christian church men to be caught up directly in the two-year Syrian conflict.

Police in Nicaragua have arrested a man from the United States who’s suspected of having produced child pornography while working as a teacher in Washington. The suspect, Justin Toth, has been on the run since 2008 and was on the FBI’s top 10 most wanted list.

The president elected in Paraguay Horacio Cartes has vowed never to put personal interests before the country’s. Mr. Cartes is one of Paraguay’s wealthiest business men, while the country, one of South America’s poorest. He also said it would be silly for Paraguay not to rejoin the regional economic bloc Mercosur, from which he was suspended last year.  

Manchester United became English Football champion for the 20th time. The 3-0 victory of Aston Villa clinched them to Premier League with four matches still to play.
